NOTES ABOUT THE FARM AND FAMILY

Compared with the rest of our small Colombian producing partners, Omar Viveros' Miraflores is a veritable coffee factory. His output has a lot to do with terroir and with the varieties of coffee he grows, but the biggest secret to Omar's production is Omar.

Omar wanted to make sure his coffees were only being picked at their peak of ripeness, so he pays a higher wage and provides sleeping quarters for the workers. He constructed his own fermentation tanks and experiments with different processes to coax out different flavors. He built a retractable sun-shield in his parabolic dryer so he can better control the temperatures in the heat of the day. This kind of ingenuity at the farm level is inspiring to see, and it's why Miraflores is a shining example of what can be accomplished when a quality-focused producer pours his efforts into producing the best coffee he can.

We've had excellent luck with Omar's coffees since we started working with him in 2009. But it wasn't until earlier this year that we realized the true potential of Miraflores.

That's when we got smart and tapped Omar and his neighbors, Hector and Fabio Artunduaga of El Renacer, to produce a steady supply of coffees from their farms that we'll be blending together and calling La Amistad. The coffees from both Miraflores and Renacer exhibit similar taste qualities, but the slight variations of acidity and sweetness from batch-to-batch and farm-to-farm will add complexity to the finished cup of La Amistad. This new partnerships is a classic win-win: they get a solid buyer for their coffees and we get relationships with the kind of reliable, quality-oriented producers we love. What's even better is that we still have the option to get microlots from both of these farms.

We're excited to launch these new relationships and look forward to working with Omar for years to come.
