NOTES ABOUT THE FARM AND FAMILY

We first met Duver and his brother Hugo at the tail end of the 2009 harvest. The brothers each owned separate, but neighboring, three-hectare farms—Las Delicias and El Vergel, both of which are part of the Desarollo producers' group out of Gigante. We were excited to find new producers to offer along other standouts like Edilfonso Yara, and it was amazing to us that all of these small growers could produce such farm-unique flavors while being in such close proximity to one another.

Over the past four years, Hugo has focused his production toward seed for new trees. Over at the Las Delicias farm, Duver is producing tiny lots—just one or two bags—that are always a treat on the cupping table. The small production of Las Delicias has allowed him to meticulously process the coffee—first fermenting in concrete tanks before washing away the remaining mucilage and then slowly drying it on a series of raised beds under a parabolic cover. It's a process that demands a lot of care and attention, and we feel fortunate to have such a remarkable coffee available to us, even in small quantities, off and on throughout the year.
