NOTES ABOUT THE FARM AND FAMILY

Earlier this season, we returned to Altos del Abejonal to check in with Mauricio Vindas and see what was happening on his farm and with his family. Mauricio's an ambitious guy--his farm is about 12 hectares, pretty big for a one-family operation—and on this visit we saw even more evidence of his go-for-it-ness: He's recently planted 5000 new Caturra and Catuai trees, as well a small amount of Villalobos Typica.

The rest of the trees on his farm are robust and producing fruit at a healthy clip. Mauricio single-handedly processes all of these beautiful coffee cherries on his hot-rodded Penagos aquapulper and then move the coffees to the raised beds he's built for drying. The result of his Herculean efforts come through with unique sweetness and acidity in every cup we taste.
